Spices from the source curated for excellence and ground fresh for flavor

Savor the Flavor from the Source

Coming from a family of grocers, merchants, and ardent chefs, our founder wondered why the vivid scents and flavors of her childhood were often missing from store-bought spices and seasoning blends. What was that gave a spice the ability to bring cuisine alive? What made a family kitchen into a gathering place where people came to spend time and talk as the food was nearing perfection? After meeting family friends who owned one of the most storied wholesale spice purveyors in the United States, Martha Pichardo came to understand that not all spices are created equal. The country of origin, species, method of cultivation, and foraging techniques will all contribute to the unique signature of single-origin spices. Spices often have only a few days in which they must be harvested to achieve maximum flavor. Thus began a quest to find the finest example of each spice from around the globe and deliver it to professional and home chefs to inspire the creation of great food and lasting memories.

Spices Health Benefits | Flavonoids that enhance the taste of food also have the ability to scavenge free radicals and reduce oxidative stress

Spices as Part of a Healthy Diet

Since ancient times, spices and herbs have been recognized for their health benefits as rich sources of natural antioxidants. The flavonoids that enhance the taste of food also have the ability to scavenge free radicals and reduce oxidative stress.

Oxidative stress has been linked to a wide range of human ailments and can be caused by emotional stress, environmental conditions, smoking, and alcohol consumption.

The natural antioxidants in spices and herbs prevent the lipids and oils in food from becoming rancid, maintain the nutritional value, and extend the useful life of foods. They can also play a preventative role to lower blood cholesterol and potentially protect against heart disease, certain cancers, and premature aging.

Some of the many spices that are rich in natural antioxidant properties include cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, coriander, saffron, turmeric, ginger, anise, caraway, fenugreek, black peppercorns, oregano, basil, bay leaf, dill, garlic powder, horseradish, allspice, marjoram, mustard, fennel flower, parsley, red pepper, peppermint, rosemary, sage, nutmeg, myrtle, and lavender.
